The wrong EHR creates friction at every point of patient care, creates billing and lab ordering complications, and is expensive and disruptive to change once you have patient records inside it. The right EHR becomes invisible infrastructure that makes your practice run smoothly.
The specific requirements for a hormone optimization telehealth practice differ significantly from general primary care. You need seamless lab ordering integration — ideally with direct-to-patient lab networks (LabCorp, Quest, Everly Health, Labcorp OnDemand) so patients can get labs drawn near them without coming to your office. Each has different strengths — the right choice depends on your patient volume, workflow preferences, and whether you plan to scale.
Critical questions to ask any EHR vendor before committing: Does it support EPCS for Schedule III substances? Does it integrate with the labs you plan to use? Is the patient portal HIPAA-compliant and does it include secure messaging? What is the data export format if you ever need to switch systems? What does the BAA cover? Can you build custom intake forms and charting templates?
Do not commit to an EHR based on a demo alone. Ask for a trial, use it with real clinical scenarios relevant to hormone optimization, and talk to practitioners already using it in a similar practice model.
