How to Build Lab Partnerships for Your Telemedicine Clinic

Lab ordering is operationally inseparable from hormone optimization practice — every patient requires comprehensive baseline labs before therapy begins, follow-up monitoring labs at 6–8 weeks, and ongoing monitoring throughout management. Building efficient, reliable lab partnerships before you see your first patient is an infrastructure requirement, not an administrative detail.

For a telehealth hormone practice, the lab infrastructure needs to solve a specific problem: your patients are geographically dispersed across your licensed states and cannot come to a lab at your location (or there may not be a physical location). The solution is direct-to-patient lab access through national networks — Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp both have patient service centers in virtually every metropolitan area and many rural areas in the US, and both allow you to order labs electronically through your EHR and have patients present at any network location with a printed or digital lab order.

Establishing your provider account with both LabCorp and Quest requires provider credentialing — submit your NPI, state license, and DEA number through each network’s provider enrollment portal. Credentialing typically takes 2–4 weeks. Set up accounts with both major networks even if you primarily use one — having a backup when a patient’s preferred location is out-of-network for one provider is important for patient experience.

For patients in rural areas or who have difficulty reaching a patient service center, at-home collection services expand access significantly. Everly Health processes samples through CLIA-certified labs and offers a range of hormone panels with at-home collection kits. Labcorp OnDemand offers a similar service. These are typically more expensive per panel than in-person draws, but the convenience value to the right patient is worth the premium.

Your EHR should have direct integration with at least one major lab network for electronic ordering and result delivery. When results arrive electronically and auto-populate into the patient chart, the clinical workflow is dramatically more efficient than manual result entry. Confirm this integration with your EHR vendor before finalizing your platform decision. Lab setup is Week 6 of Clinic In A Box™. Book here. Call 844-734-2112.
